Osher School of Music Youth Ensembles at The University of Southern Maine: Audition for the 2024-25 Academic Year.

Auditions will be held Tuesday, May 21, Wednesday, May 22, and Thursday, May 23 from 3:00–7:00 p.m. in Corthell Hall, University Way, on the USM Gorham Campus.

The priority deadline to submit this form and request an audition is Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Late requests will be accepted based on availability.

AUDITION DATES by INSTRUMENT
  • Tue. May 21 - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Violin, and Viola.
  • Wed. May 22 - All Strings - Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Harp.
  • Thu. May 23 - Percussion, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Instructions:
  1. Complete a separate Google registration form for each student wishing to audition.
  2. You will receive an email with your confirmed audition date and time on or before May 10. 
  3. Review the audition requirements for each ensemble here: Youth Ensembles Auditions and prepare for your audition.
  4. Arrive at least 15 minutes early for your audition, check in at the lobby, and follow the signs to your audition room, and wait quietly for your time. You may use any available practice room to warm up.

Concerts:
  • Monday, November 4, 2024 at Merrill Auditorium (confirmed)
  • Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Merrill Auditorium (tentative hold)
  • Note: additional concerts for the SMSO & PYSO will be announced soon.

Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings between 5:45–7:15 p.m. in Corthell Hall on the USM Gorham Campus during the school year. Students invited to play in PYSO (Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra) rehearse from 5:45 until 9:00 p.m. We do not rehearse on common school vacation weeks. 

Attendance: To maintain the high artistic standards expected of our ensembles, students are expected to commit to attending every rehearsal possible. Excessive absences, typically more than two per concert cycle, may result in the student being suspended temporarily.


Tuition: $350 per year. Discounted family rates are available.

Membership fees are nonrefundable.
Payment in full is due before the second rehearsal in September.

After your student has successfully auditioned and placed in an ensemble,  you will be invited to register and pay through our third-party app, Ultracamp.

Private music instruction is highly recommended to ensure your student continues to progress. Unlike team sports, music requires specialized instruction specific to each instrument. 

Contact your school's music teacher or local music schools for recommendations. Or try searching "private music lessons near me." Interview potential teachers thoroughly. Ask for videos or recordings of their performances and for references of former students or parents, as you would any other private tutor or employee.
